Activist and software developer Rose Njeri
Activist and software developer Rose Njeri has been released on a personal bond of Ksh 100,000 after spending more than 72 hours in custody at Pangani Police Station. She was arrested on Friday and finally brought to court on Tuesday.
Njeri is accused of violating the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act by creating a website that allowed Kenyans to submit objections to the 2025 Finance Bill. The government claims she interfered with computer systems without permission.
Her arrest and long detention caused public uproar, with politicians, civil rights groups, and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) demanding her release. LSK President Faith Odhiambo strongly criticized how her case was handled.
At Milimani Law Courts, a legal team led by former Chief Justice David Maraga came to her defense. The court is now expected to decide on June 20, 2025, whether the charges against her are valid.
