Bishop Philip Sulumeti
The Catholic Church has lost a great leader. Emeritus Bishop Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega has passed away. The retired bishop died last night while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital. His death was confirmed by Bishop Joseph Obanyi, the current Bishop of Kakamega.

Bishop Sulumeti was born on August 15, 1937. He was ordained as a priest on January 6, 1966 by Pope (Saint) Paul VI in Kisumu. On May 28, 1972, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu and Titular Bishop of Urci at the age of 34. Later that year, on August 20, 1972, he was ordained as Bishop by Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa, then Archbishop of Dar es Salaam.
He became Bishop of Kisumu on December 9, 1976, and later, on February 28, 1978, he was appointed Bishop of Kakamega. Bishop Sulumeti led the Kakamega Diocese faithfully for 36 years until his retirement on December 5, 2014, when Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi took over.
Funeral and burial details will be announced later.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
