Communications Authority of Kenya
The Communication Authority of Kenya(CA) is pushing a new law that could force you to hand over your national ID or passport to use Social Media platforms.
The bill wants social media companies like Meta (Facebook, Instagram), TikTok, and X (Twitter) to verify every user’s identity using official documents: no ID, no access.
The bill also demands that anyone posting content “for the public” (even memes or opinions) must register with Kenya’s Communications Authority (CA).
CA argues the rules will curb cybercrime, hate speech, and misinformation, problems that have spiked during elections and crises (June 2024 protests).
They say linking accounts to real identities will make arresting online fraudsters and bullies easier.
Failure to comply could mean fines or even blocked accounts.
