E-Citizen
Kenyaβs trusted online government services platform, e-Citizen, is now at the center of a major corruption scandal. A recent audit has uncovered shocking irregularities, revealing that over KSh 9.4 billion in public funds may have been lost through shady contracts, untraceable payments, and unauthorized bank transfers.
The revelations have sparked outrage among Members of Parliament, particularly those on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), who are now calling for the immediate shutdown of the e-Citizen system. They argue that continuing to operate the platform poses a serious threat to both national security and public finances.
According to the audit, the platform, originally designed to simplify access to government services, was allegedly manipulated and used as a tool to funnel billions of dollars through secret accounts. Among the most concerning findings is the loss of KSh 9.4 billion in government revenue and the wrongful billing of Kenyans to the tune of KSh 2.6 billion in convenience fees.

MPs are now demanding that the contract with the private company running the platform be terminated, and a full investigation be launched to trace where the money went.
This scandal has not only shaken public confidence in a vital digital service but also exposed glaring weaknesses in the oversight and management of government systems. What was meant to serve citizens efficiently may have instead become a gateway for looting taxpayer money.
