Governor Kimani Wamatangi attends the burial of Isaac Ichungwah Ngugi, father to MP Kimani Ichungwah
Three days after laying his sister to rest, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi on Monday showed courage as he joined hundreds of mourners in Kikuyu Constituency for the burial of Isaac Ichung’wah Ngugi, father to National Assembly Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah.
Governor Wamatangi, who recently lost his sister Winnie Peninah Nyambura, his closest sibling as the first-born in the family, attended the burial to condole with the Ichung’wah family. The sombre event drew thousands of mourners, including political leaders from across the country.
To the surprise of many, the Governor was not given a chance to speak, despite being one of the most senior leaders present, and as the host Governor.
However, when Embu MP Cecily Mbarire introduced Governor Wamatangi to the crowd, the gathering erupted into loud cheers, underscoring his popularity in the region. The warm reception contrasted with the decision to deny him a speaking slot, raising questions among leaders and locals.
It also puzzled many why Mbarire, who chairs the ruling UDA party but is not part of the Council of Governors leadership, spoke on behalf of the CoG during the introductions. While the burial was not designated as a political event, both Ichung’wah and Wamatangi belong to UDA.
Governor Wamatangi, known for his calm demeanor and non-confrontational leadership style, did not protest the decision and remained composed throughout the event. His supporters said his attendance despite personal grief reflected his commitment to unity and respect for colleagues.
Political observers noted the incident highlighted the delicate interplay of protocol, party politics and public perception at high-profile funerals in Kenya.
