The High Court in Mombasa has sentenced 40-year-old Murad Awadh Mbarak to 30 years in prison for killing his wife, Nuru Ibrahim, in Kanamai, Kilifi County.
The court heard that on June 19, 2022, Mbarak stabbed his 28-year-old wife several times after many domestic disputes. They had argued often, including over her decision to join Instagram against his wishes.
While asking for a lighter sentence, Mbarak told the court he was sorry for what he did. He said he had thought about his actions while in custody since 2022. He asked for mercy, saying he is now alone, with no children and no home.
However, the prosecution described the killing as cruel and inhumane. The court was told that Nuru Ibrahim, a mother of six, was stripped naked and stabbed many times in front of her children and neighbours. Prosecutors also said he tried to stop neighbours from helping her.
In its decision, the court said the act was very cruel and upheld the conviction, sentencing Mbarak to 30 years in prison.
