Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been awarded the Distinguished Public Service and Governance Award by IFP Global Advocates of Peace (GAP) Kenya in recognition of his leadership and programmes aimed at transforming livelihoods, strengthening public infrastructure and promoting community empowerment.
The United Nations‑endorsed initiative feted the Governor on Friday, 15th May 2026, for a range of county projects that officials say have delivered tangible benefits to thousands of households.
The citation highlights Wamatangi’s agricultural and social‑service interventions, including distribution of piglets and improved kienyeji chicks to more than 130,000 women, provision of maize seed and fertilizer to over 700,000 farmers, construction of 512 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres and feeding programmes reaching over 50,000 ECDE learners, and expansion and equipping of health facilities with 32 new hospitals and upgrades to existing hospitals and markets.
“We are honoured to recognise leaders whose vision and implementation have directly improved family welfare and community resilience,” IFP GAP Kenya said in a statement announcing the award. The organisation described the Governor’s agenda as advancing “transformative governance, community empowerment and sustainable development.”

County officials said the livestock and seed distributions form part of Kiambu’s wider food security and economic empowerment strategy, while the ECDE and nutrition programme is intended to boost early‑years learning and reduce child malnutrition. The expansion of health infrastructure, they added, aims to increase access to care across the county’s urban and rural wards.
Governor Wamatangi has for more than a decade been passionate about community service, and through the Wamatangi Foundation has served thousands through different initiatives that include ICT trainings, transport solutions and water storage solutions among others.
OTHER AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
Governor Wamatangi has previously received several international and local awards acknowledging his public service and development record.
Residents and beneficiary groups interviewed in Kiambu commended the county’s programmes. A woman farmer from Gatundu South who received seeds and fertilizer described the support as “life‑changing,” saying it enabled her to expand production and pay school fees for her children.
A teacher from a newly built ECDE centre said the facility and feeding programme had increased early‑years enrolment and attendance.
The award was received by officials from the Governor’s office and representatives from the County Assembly who included Deputy Speaker John Njuhi, Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke, Chief of Staff James Njuguna, Director Grace Turanta and Kabete MCA Grace Hinga (MamaYoo).

The Governor’s office said Wamatangi will use the recognition to deepen investments in agriculture, health and education, and to strengthen partnerships with national agencies and development organisations to scale successful pilots across the county.
