Affordable Housing in Mathare
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed that the United Opposition will reverse the affordable housing tax policy, promising a full refund to those who have already paid it and advising Kenyans not to purchase affordable houses under the current regime.
Speaking on the KTN News show on Sunday, Gachagua stated, “Do not spend your money on affordable housing. We shall start with refunding money to those forced to pay affordable housing tax, and the last will be those who buy these houses. So, do not buy these houses.”
He affirmed that reversing affordable housing would be his top priority on day one in office, saying, “The first executive order, on day one in office, will be to reverse affordable housing.”
Observers note that Gachagua appears to be adopting a strategy similar to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who used executive orders to undo policies implemented by President Joe Biden.
Gachagua’s remarks signal a strong opposition stance against the current affordable housing framework.
Most Kenyans were aggrieved by affordable housing with some asking ‘if I own a home, why should I contribute the tax while I do not need a house?’
The President Ruto administration has faced a lot of opposition because of the affordable housing program, but remain adamant that it is a good thing for country.
