Hundreds turned out Saturday for the County Government of Kiambu’s first Family Fun Day – Kiambu County Family Run 2026 – at Ndumberi Stadium, themed “Run Against Diabetes: Healthy Families, Healthy Kiambu.”
The event was launched with a flag-off by CECM for Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication Osman Korar, CECM for Administration and Public Service Salome Muthoni and Kiambu Municipal Manager John Kabogo.

The Easter event featured 3km, 5km, and 10km runs, biking, walking, skating, football, and rope jumping. A diabetes awareness talk urged families and residents to adopt healthier diets and physical activity to counter rising lifestyle diseases from sedentary habits and fast food.
Olympic medalist Henry Wanyoike, who competes despite visual impairment, attended and praised local runs in Kikuyu and Kiambu. “I actively participate in local runs and also hold one to encourage healthy communities and also raise a generation that appreciates fitness,” he said.

Other attendees included CECM for Water and Environment David Kuria, Chief Officer for Sports Godfrey Masolo, Chief Officer for Youth and Communication Dr. Mercy Njoki, Chief Officer for MAUD Martin Kangiri, Chief Officer for Cooperatives Peter Ndegwa, Chief Officer for Public Service Daisy Cheboi, Ag. Chief Officer for Roads Julie Waweru, and Githunguri Municipal Manager John Gathii.

Jump Rope Coach Stephen Odiambo demonstrated the exercise’s benefits by making impressive jumps up in the air with a skipping rope for a long time, showing his expertise and fitness levels, having started skipping rope in Grade 3.
“I started skipping in Grade 3 in the year 2013, and I encourage people to jump rope – it’s fun, builds your and entertaining. We are glad to be part of this event today at Ndumberi Stadium and showcase our skills using the rope,” said Coach Odiambo.
The Jump Rope groups demonstrated different styles jumping solo, in pairs, and also as a group. The spectators were amazed by the different styles and exercise one could do with just a rope demanding for coordination and fitness.
Coach Odhiambo promoted ‘Jump Rope’ as an affordable fitness option needing only a rope and consistency, and which could be started at a young age like he did in Grade 3. The Jump Rope team has been invited to Los Angeles, USA, to showcase their talent and skills.
Participant Mary Njeri walked 5km with her children. “This was a fun, fit way to spend Easter at the Kiambu Family Fun Day. I look forward to more,” she said.

Present were football teams who also competed in some friendlies.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi, an avid runner who has completed 42km marathons like the Lewa Marathon for conservation, backs such fitness initiatives.
