Surveyor Kigathe Kionywe eyes KIkuyu MP Seat
As the 2027 general elections draw near, Kikuyu residents seem to have a leaning towards the candidature of Surveyor Kigathi Kionywe as their next MP.
Recent opinion polls have shown Mr Kigathi as the leading candidate for the position of MP in Kikuyu Constituency.
On April 24, 2026, the Swiss Poll International showed Mr Kigathi leading in the race for Kikuyu MP with 44.3%, followed by Ichungwah 33.9%, Owen Ndungu 14.6%, Kuria Wa Kikuyu 6% and undecided 2.2%.
In addition to the four above, two others have shown their interest for the seat; Wakili Muchanga Kiragu and Clarence Kaguora.
However, Surveyor Kigathi seems to be rising above all the five as the most preferred candidate due to his grassroots network through constant interaction with the people and also his association with the Democracy for the Citizen Party (DCP) and its party leader, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The current MP, Kimani Ichungwah, seems to have lost appeal with the electorate due to his explosive political statements, abusive language and close association with President William Ruto. The President has also lost popularity with the people especially in Mount Kenya region.
Mr Kigathi demonstrates an ability to serve in the national arena as he renders his voice to pressing national matters that affect the people.
For instance, during the fuel demonstrations he stood in solidarity with the transport industry and millions of Kenyans affected by the unbearable rise in the cost of fuel.
“When transport operators are forced to shut down, it is ordinary wananchi who suffer most. For the hardworking people of Kikuyu, even two days without going to work can mean empty tables, unpaid rent and growing hardship for families already stretched to the limit,” said Mr Kigathi.
GRASSROOTS INFLUENCE
Mr Kigathi has also transversed the homes of the local people supporting them during burials, weddings, school talks and other social events. He also identifies with societal problems affecting families.
While attending a burial in Kerwa, Mr Kigathi spoke deeply about the issue of mental health and depression affecting families, which sadly resulted to even death through murder or suicide.
“This heartbreaking incident is also a painful reminder that depression and mental health struggles are becoming an alarming situation in our society. Many people are silently battling emotional pain, stress, and hopelessness. As a community, we must continue checking on one another, speaking up, and supporting those going through difficult moments before situations become tragic,” he said.

Mr Kigathi also advocates for the voting rights of all Kenyans saying their vote is their voice.
“I urge all the youth and the elderly to come out in large numbers and ensure they register as voters so they can cast their vote for their choice candidate. If you love your country, you can only show this through your vote,” he said.

POLITICAL ALLIANCES
Surveyor Kigathi has time and again appeared in public in support of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his political party, Democracy for the Citizen Party (DCP),
He has openly declared he will seek election for the Kikuyu MP seat under DCP, whose slogan is Skiza Ground.

Following his past attempt at the seat, he is viewed as a frontrunner best placed to beat the incumbent MP.
MP Ichungwah has served Kikuyu as MP for three consecutive terms and was unopposed in the 2022 elections.
